A special welcome to the 30 somethings, to anyone reading our newsletter for the first time or anyone who has joined us recently.  Do give some of our events a try – we are a very friendly group  - always eager to meet and welcome new people.

 

If you’re coming to an event for the first time – let the contact know – they will look out for you and introduce you to the other members of the group.
If you have problems with transport – again let the contact know – they may know someone in your area who can give you a lift.  Don’t be too shy to ask! – We are all here to help and support each other.
Please let the contact know that you are coming, so that they can make relevant bookings etc in advance.
 

REGULAR HAPPENINGS

1st Friday, Pump House, Albert Dock Liverpool 8pm. 

2nd Saturday,  Hidden Gem, John Dalton Street, Manchester (Mass 12 noon).  Meet : 12.30 in the porch. 

3rd Sunday,  Taize prayer, (or Mass).

Thursdays, JIVING IN CHESTER – A new event.  The session starts at 7.30 pm and costs £5. 

Do check the arrangements for these events as details can vary.

 

SATURDAY 6TH SEPTEMBER – HORSERIDING IN CONWY, NORTH WALES – Recognised riding school with experienced instructors; suitable for all levels. Also opportunity for day out in Conwy with sightseeing/Conwy Castle/meal etc. 

12th - 14th  SEPTEMBER – MALPAS  WEEKEND -  a chance to share on what it means to be a Catholic and how Project 2030 can help us.  Malpas is always popular.  We had a full house here at Easter from all the groups.  Deposit of £15 to St Joseph’s Centre, Malpas, Cheshire, SY14 7DD, England.  Tel: 01948 860 055 during office hours (cheques made payable to St Joseph’s Centre).  Time for a walk or visit to Chester Saturday afternoon etc. Inputs on the Christian life from the perspective of the single life, married life, religious life, priesthood.  Price: £60.  Last year there was a Review Meeting of all the groups at Malpas.  This will be repeated every 2nd year and the alternate years we agreed to put on something of mutual interest to all the groups.  By car take the A41south from Chester.  After 10 miles at the second small roundabout turn right for Malpas.  At the T junction in the village turn right for Tilston.  St Joseph’s is 300 yards, on the left.  Pick-ups at Chester or Whitchurch, Shropshire for those coming by train.

SATURDAY 20TH SEPTEMBER – WALK AROUND CHESTER – Meet at around 11am and decide what you would like to do in Chester for the day. 

* SUNDAY 21ST  SEPTEMBER TAIZE PRAYER - Meet up at the provisional time of  16:00 for a Taize Prayer. 

SUNDAY 28TH SEPTEMBER – INGLETON WATERFALLS – A gentle walk down two  river valleys on well-maintained footpaths.  You will require stout footwear (not necessarily boots).  There is a fee per car to do this walk, so car sharing would be a good idea.  MEET ON the Broughton roundabout. This is at Junction 1 of M55 (accessed immediately after Junction 32 of the M6 – Keep your wits about you at J32 or you might miss it!).  You can actually park on the roundabout. 

SUNDAY 5TH OCTOBER – OUR LADY OF FERNYHALGH – Visit to the shrine of Our Lady – a chance to pray and reflect with Our Lady – perhaps a chance for a walk. 

* MONDAY 6TH OCTOBER – PRAYER GROUP, STOCKPORT – For a while some of the group have been talking about meeting to reflect and pray  together, so we are going to try it for the coming first Mondays of each month (so, also on Monday 3 November and Monday 1 December).  Meet at 8.00 pm at St Joseph’s Presbytery, 1 Tatton Street, Stockport.  Head for the town centre; the church is opposite the entrance to Merseyway car park.  The presbytery is at the back of the church.  This is Hugh’s new community. (see also 16 November).  Meet after the 7.30 pm Mass in the church. 

SATURDAY 11TH OCTOBER – HIDDEN GEM MEETING – See regular happenings.

SUNDAY 12TH OCTOBER -  WALK IN ALDERLEY EDGE which is situated on the A34, about 20 minutes drive southwards from Manchester.  As you enter Alderley Edge from the North, after the railway station, over a little hill, there is a car park on the right hands side.   Meet there at 1pm.  Duncan will lead a walk to the edge! The afternoon will no doubt finish off with a meal – (The ‘de Trafford Arms do a good roast to which some of us can testify!)

* SUNDAY 19TH OCTOBER – TAIZE – details to be announced. 

 SATURDAY 25TH – SUNDAY 26TH – GLASGOW CEILIDH WEEKEND.  A very enjoyable weekend, with a chance to see Glasgow, meet members of the Glasgow twenties and thirties and dance yourself dizzy on the Saturday night.  (No previous experience of Ceilidh dancing required!).   

* SATURDAY 1ST NOVEMBER – MEAL AT THE HARD ROCK CAFÉ MANCHESTERWe will go for a drink at ‘Tiger Tiger’ and then sample the delights of American cuisine afterwards. 

* SUNDAY 9TH NOVEMBER - BOWLING AND BARBEQUEMeet up at the bowling alley in Cheshire Oaks at 14:00. We will go bowling followed by a Mongolian BBQ in "Elements" which is right across the road from the Bowling Alley. Price £8.50 for two games and shoe hire.  Cheshire Oaks is signposted from the M53. Directions - Cheshire Oaks is adjacent to junction 10 of the M53 motorway and just a mile away from Junction 15 of the M56. By train - Cheshire Oaks is just a short bus or taxi ride from Ellesmere Port Railway Station and town centre. By Bus - Regular bus services run from Ellesmere Port centre.

SATURDAY 15TH NOVEMBERPRODUCTION OF ‘KES’ AT THE NEW VIC THEATRE NEWCASTLE-UNDER-LYME  - ‘ The story of Billy Casper, a school boy, who finds a young kestrel and decides to rear it.  His life is transformed by this as he rediscovers his own dignity and self-belief.’ Performance at 7.30 pm.  Tickets between £9 and £15.  The theatre is situated on the A53.  Exit at Junction 16 from the M6.  Drive along the A500 towards Stoke-on-Trent.  Take the exit marked A53 – Hanley, City Centre, Newcastle-under-Lyme.  Take the right hand  exit at the roundabout, following the A53 Newcastle sign up the hill.  After one set of traffic lights, drive to the top of the hill, the theatre is on your right hand side.  Meet inside at 7pm.  Let me know by the 6th November if you would like tickets. 

* SUNDAY 16TH NOVEMBER  -TAIZE MASS AND HOUSE WARMING, STOCKPORT -  Hugh moved on 1 September to St Joseph’s Presbytery, Tatton St, St Petersgate, Stockport SK1 1EJ.   We’ll have the Taize service with Mass here this month at 4.00 pm while we are still looking for a more central permanent venue.  Eats afterwards.  Bring something to share. Head for the centre of Stockport.  St Joseph’s Church is opposite the entrance to the Merseyway shopping centre carpark.  The presbytery is at the back of the Church.

* SATURDAY 22ND  NOVEMBER – CHRISTMAS MEAL AND DISCO – at the Stella Maris, New Strand, Bootle, L20 4TQ at 7.30 pm.  Cost £20.  Bar available.  Send cheque there for the full amount made out to ‘Stella Maris’ as soon as possible.  If you want a receipt include an SAE.  There are 30 single rooms available (first come, first served) for bed and breakfast at £17.50.  Again, send full amount to Stella Maris.  The Stella Maris centre is between the New Strand bus station and train station.

* DECEMBER 7TH – LUNCH AT PRESTON BROOK.  Meet at 12.30 pm for a pub lunch and drink.  The Preston Brook is signposted from the roundabout at Junction 11 of the M56. 

* DECEMBER 12TH, 13TH, 14TH – ADVENT RETREAT AT MALPAS – A chance to prepare for Christmas in Malpas’ lovely surroundings and meet members from London, Glasgow and Dublin groups.  Deposit of £15 before 30 November.  Details as for September weekend.

SUNDAY DECEMBER 21ST – A WINTER’S WALK (John and Barney will lead us).   Time and location to be decided nearer the time. 

* SATURDAY 27TH DECEMBER - CAROLS AND PARTY  at Bootle.  6.30 pm.  The carols will take place as part of Mass.  Bring some food to share.  Bar available.  You can stay overnight, bed and breakfast £17.50.  Please send to the Stella Maris as soon as possible (details under 29 November).

PRESTON FOOTBALL MUSEUM – A chance to reminisce about your heroes from the great game.  Entrance to this museum is now free and Michael has agreed to organise a trip there.  SUNDAY JANUARY 11TH 2004 was tentatively mentioned.

SATURDAY JANUARY 17TH – AN EVENING MEAL IN KNUTSFORD –  ‘La Belle Epoque’.

SUNDAY JANUARY 18TH – TAIZE – details to be announced. 

* SATURDAY 24TH JANUARY - CLAY PIGEON SHOOTING – If you fancy yourself as Billy the Kid or Calamity Jane here’s your chance to prove it.  Come and enjoy an excellent day out at Clay Pigeon Shooting at the Butcher’s Arms.  For only £17.50 you get 25 clay pigeons and a meal thrown in.  Don’t worry if you haven’t done it before, they cater for absolute beginners.  Meet in the car part of the Quality Hotel, opposite Dehon House.  

12TH – 27TH FEBRUARY – INDIAFully-booked, but there is a waiting list in case of cancellations.  Contact Hugh.
